Supporting Sixth Form Students with trainer Sarah Pavey:
Sixth form students may be aspiring to apprenticeships, technical qualifications or higher education. However the learning environment of the sixth form is very different to the lower school and students have to learn to adopt independent learning practices and manage their time more effectively. There are new skills to develop in critical thinking, digital, media and information literacy. This transition also places pressure on the mental health and wellbeing of students. All of these changes mean that the 6th form librarian has to accommodate a different skill set and provide a service and resources more suited to individual student needs. This course will cover the issues highlighted and will enable you to:
*  Consider the range of resources needed to support teaching and learning in the sixth form with reference to the requirements of the curriculum and exam syllabi
*  Learn some exercises for supporting critical thinking, digital, media and information literacy and to understand why this is important
*  Be prepared for helping students in academic writing, personal statements and CVs
*  Be aware of behavioural issues and how to provide an atmosphere conducive to learning.
(£144 for WSLS Subscribers, £108 for SLA Members, £180 for non memebers)
9.15-16:00pm Warwickshire SLS, Hawkespoint 1, Hawkes Drive, Heathcote Industrial Estate, WARWICK, CV34 6LX

An Introduction to The FOSIL Group by Darryl Toerien -
David Deutsch* said that in a world where knowledge is growing exponentially, the tools for acquiring and interpreting that knowledge must be at least as important as the actual knowledge itself. This growing challenge for schools is an unprecedented opportunity for school librarians, provided that we are familiar with the tools for acquiring and interpreting knowledge. FOSIL is such a tool.(Framework Of Skills for Inquiry Learning)
FOSIL** is a model of the inquiry process and an underlying continuum of inquiry skills, which includes information literacy skills, stretching from Early Years through to Year 13. It was adopted in 2012 and is based on the exemplary Empire State Information Fluency Continuum (2009/2012, 2019), which serves 3.2 million students in 4,236 school libraries in New York State, and The FOSIL Group. FOSIL is at the centre of The FOSIL Group, a growing community of mainly teachers and librarians - currently 135 - adapting this particular tool to their specific needs.
* Visiting Professor of Physics and Founder Member of the Centre for Quantum Computation at Oxford University
** Framework Of Skills for Inquiry Learning

The session will provide an introduction to and overview of FOSIL and related resources, as well as a discussion of how FOSIL might be adapted to the specific needs of delegates.
