Join us for our next Secondary Network Meeting on Monday 28th of Febuary
Our next virtual meeting will be on Monday the 28th of February, 2022 at 3.30pm!
Please join us for this FREE virtual event for any Secondary school staff who are involved with running the library/promoting reading at your school (e.g. librarians/teachers/support assistants/literacy co-ordinators).
Darryl Toerien will be joining us to talk to about FOSIL and inquiry based learning!
We are delighted that we will be joined by Darryl Toerien, Head of Inquiry Based Learning at Blanchelande
College. Darryl has been instrumental in the development of the FOSIL
group, a growing community of schools and education professionals, which aims to enable learning through enquiry and librarians and teachers have a key role in facilitating this.
Inquiry enables the school library to fulfil its educational and moral purpose.
On the one hand, inquiry is a learning process that is as applicable to learning about any subject in the classroom as it is to learning about any subject in and through the library. Because this learning process is dependent on reading – nonfiction and fiction – inquiry positions the school library/librarian as integral to the educational purpose of the school. On the other hand, because inquiry requires, and therefore develops, not only cognitive skills, but also emotional and social skills, inquiry positions the library/librarian as integral to the broader educational purpose of the school.
FOSIL – as a highly regarded model of the inquiry learning process and a framework of cognitive, emotional and social skills stretching from Reception to Year 13 – is a powerful tool in fulfilling our educational and moral purpose, and we will consider how we might go about using it to this end.
The session will also give you the opportunity to ask questions, network and share ideas/experiences with other teachers and librarians. We will also share lots of useful links, book recommendations, resources, training and CPD opportunities.
The network meeting will be hosted by Warwickshire Schools Library Service (WSLS). All schools within our region and surrounding areas are welcome to attend (Warwickshire, Worcestershire, Walsall, Solihull, Oxfordshire, Birmingham, Staffordshire etc).
